11 O’Closcars — 2016 Favorite Creators

Each year, we celebrate our favorite comics and creators by recognizing them in our year-end awards — the 11 O’Closcars. Unlike many shows or websites that pick a single “Best of…”, we share with you each of our favorites in each category. As importantly, we also poll our fantastic community for their choices. If you haven’t already, give Episode 456 a listen to hear the entirety of our annual awards extravaganza. In the alternative, we’ve provided all the winners by category here for your handy reference.

2016 Favorite Creators

Favorite Writers

  • David — Tom King (Batman, Omega Men, Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)
  • Jason — Rick Remender (Black Science, Deadly Class, Devolution, Low, Seven to Eternity, Tokyo Ghost)
  • Vince — Jeff Lemire (All New Hawkeye, Black Hammer, Bloodshot Reborn, Descender, Moon Knight, Old Man Logan)
  • EOC Community — Tom King (Batman, Omega Men, Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)

This is always a tough category considering the immense amount of writing talent in the industry today. David and the audience chose our good friend Tom King, who emerged this year with a masterful combination of creator-owned (Sheriff of Babylon), tent pole (Batman) and out-of-nowhere darling (The Vision). Jason voted for Rick Remender (again) for an unparalleled collection of creator-owned works this year. Last but certainly not least, Vince recognized recent guest Jeff Lemire who was not only prolific, but dominated multiple genres across four publishers.

Favorite Pencilers

  • David — Patrick Gleason (Superman)
  • Jason — Jerome Opena (Seven to Eternity)
  • Vince — Chris Bachalo (Dr. Strange)
  • EOC Community — Jerome Opena (Seven to Eternity)

David recognized Pat Gleason for his role in the re-emergence of Superman as a go-to book. Vince couldn’t ignore the cartooning mastery of Chris Bachalo on Dr. Strange — a book perfectly suited for his exaggerated style. Jason and the listeners agreed on Jerome Opena, who brought “world building” to a new level with his work on Seven to Eternity.

Favorite Inkers or Inker/Pencilers

  • David — Mick Gray (Superman)
  • Jason — Wes Craig (Deadly Class)
  • Vince — Matthew Allison (Cankor!)
  • EOC Community — Danny Miki (All-Star Batman, Batman)

David, not surprisingly, recognized the talents of a true “inker” in Mick Gray, who has been partnering with Jorge Jimenez on Superman. The EOC community also opted for a traditional inker in Danny Miki, who worked on most of the Bat books in 2016. Vince chose Matthew Allison, whose creator-owned Cankor! is among Vince’s favorite visual extravaganzas. Jason had no choice but to give his award to Wes Craig, who pencils and inks himself. Wes is the visual engine behind one of Jason’s favorite books, Deadly Class.

Favorite Color Artists

  • David — Matthew Wilson (Black Widow, Captain Marvel, The Mighty Thor, The Wicked + Divine)
  • Jason — Jordan Boyd (All New Wolverine, Astonishing Ant-Man, Deadly Class, Devolution, Invisible Republic)
  • Vince — Tyler Crook (Harrow County)
  • EOC Community — Jordie Bellaire (Batman, Deadpool, Future Quest, Injection, Moon Knight, Scarlet Witch, Vision)

The EOC community went with the incomparable Jordie Bellaire. All three hosts acknowledge that Jordie could be the winner every year, so they went out of their way to recognize other color artists. Vince swerved by choosing Tyler Crook, who handled all of the artistic chores in Harrow County. David thought Matthew Wilson had a phenomenal year particularly handling so many different art styles. Jason found Jordan Boyd‘s work particularly compelling this year, with an uncanny ability to handle distinctive color palettes on a handful of titles.

Favorite Writer/Artists (Does It All)

  • David — Matt Kindt (Dept. H, Divinity, Ether, Ninjak, Rai)
  • Jason — Skottie Young (I Hate Fairyland, Rocket Raccoon and Groot)
  • Vince — Skottie Young (I Hate Fairyland, Rocket Raccoon and Groot)
  • EOC Community — Matt Kindt (Dept. H, Divinity, Ether, Ninjak, Rai)

As one of our closest friends and frequent “4th Chair” on the show, Jason and Vince were thrilled to recognize Skottie Young for his comedic mastery. I Hate Fairyland stood out on the stands and is the culmination of the cartooning Skottie has been working toward for years. David and the audience agreed that Matt Kindt had an impressive year as both a cartoonist (Dept. H) and writer of both creator-owned (Ether) and Valiant Universe books.

Favorite Cover Artists

  • David — Mike del Mundo (Carnage, Vision, Weirdworld)
  • Jason — Mike del Mundo (Carnage, Vision, Weirdworld)
  • Vince — Mike del Mundo (Carnage, Vision, Weirdworld)
  • EOC Community — Mike del Mundo (Carnage, Vision, Weirdworld)

It’s unanimous! Look, sometimes we strive for diversity but other times there’s just a runaway, clear-cut choice. This year Mike del Mundo cemented himself as the most provocative, innovative cover artist in the business. His ability to balance a unique graphic pop art approach with traditional superhero themes was exceptional in 2016.

Breakout Performers

  • David — Jorge Jimenez (Earth 2: Society, Superman)
  • Jason — Tom King (Batman, Omega Men, Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)
  • Vince — Daniel Warren Johnson (Alabaster, Space-Mullet!)
  • EOC Community — Tom King (Batman, Omega Men, Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)

David’s love affair with Superman knows no bounds, as he cites relative newcomer Jorge Jimenez as the breakout talent of 2016 for his work on the Man of Steel. Jason and the EOC listeners agreed that Tom King‘s meteoric rise (10 years in the making!) warranted recognition. Vince warmed all our hearts by recognizing the talents of Daniel Warren Johnson, who put out one of the best web comics in the land, Space-Mullet!, this year while prepping for his true breakout gig in 2017 with Image’s Extremity series.

Creators of the Year

  • David — Jeff Lemire (All New Hawkeye, Black Hammer, Bloodshot Reborn, Descender, Moon Knight, Old Man Logan)
  • Jason — Jeff Lemire (All New Hawkeye, Black Hammer, Bloodshot Reborn, Descender, Moon Knight, Old Man Logan)
  • Vince — Tom King (Batman, Omega Men, Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)
  • EOC Community — Tom King (Batman, Omega Men, Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)

The “Big Enchilada” award was a split decision. David and Jason chose Jeff Lemire for his dominant storytelling across multiple genres. Vince and the EOC listeners went with Tom King, who arguably had the year’s most critically-acclaimed series in The Vision and also DC’s franchise book in Batman.
